Secure Release IPP Queues

IPP Queues for Secure Release enable users to send print jobs to a secure queue and release them at any supported printer. This method leverages the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) for driverless printing, making it ideal for mixed environments and zero-trust deployments. It simplifies driver management, enhances security, and ensures compatibility across a wide range of devices.

Key Characteristics:

  • Universal Compatibility – Works with thousands of printer models, from small single-function printers to large multifunction devices.

  • Simplified IT Management – No need to maintain multiple print drivers.

  • Secure Printing – Uses IPPS (IPP over HTTPS) for encrypted job delivery.

  • Future-Ready – Compatible with modern Windows print architecture and Windows Protected Print (WPP).

Note: Starting with Print Scout 8.1, the default driver for Windows 11 is Microsoft IPP Class Driver. On Windows 10, the Pharos Class IPP Driver is still installed by default.

Microsoft IPP Class Driver Overview

The Microsoft IPP Class Driver is a built-in print driver in Windows 11 that supports printing using the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP). With Print Scout 8.1, Pharos uses this driver by default on Windows 11 and Windows on Arm devices. This ensures compatibility with Windows Protected Print (WPP) and the Arm platform.

Note: Pharos IPP driver is the default driver for Windows 10.

Print Support App (PSA)

The Print Support App (PSA) is a Microsoft feature introduced in Windows 11 that enhances the standard Windows printing experience by enabling access to advanced print options. With PSA, users can access features that are not available in the default Windows print dialog, including:

  • Tray selection

  • Duplex (double-sided) printing

  • Finishing options such as stapling, punching, and binding

PSA works alongside the Microsoft IPP Class Driver to provide a more complete and customizable printing experience.

PSA is automatically installed when you deploy Print Scout v8.1 on a Windows 11 device. Once installed, the Print Support App enables enhanced print features and displays familiar IPP driver finishing controls, such as tray selection, duplex printing, and finishing options.

How to access advanced print settings with Microsoft IPP Class Driver

  1. Open the print dialog as you normally would when printing a document.

  2. In the printer app, click More Settings. The dialog will expand to show advanced options such as paper size, print quality, and duplex settings.

Important Notes:

  • Print Support App (PSA) is only supported on Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. To enable PSA features, we recommend installing Print Scout on devices running Windows 11 24H2 or newer.

  • If the PSA is uninstalled, Print Scout only offers basic print options. To restore full functionality, simply log back in. PSA will be automatically reinstalled and all features are restored.

Default IPP Driver by Operating System

The default driver varies depending on the operating system version and architecture. The table below outlines which IPP driver is used by default for each supported configuration. If preferred, IT administrators can change the default driver used for secure queues. This can be done by updating the Secure Queue Settings in the Deployment section of the Print Scout Configuration Tool, allowing customization to suit specific environment needs.

Operating System Default Driver Notes
Windows 11 Microsoft IPP Class Driver Starting with Print Scout 8.1, the default driver is Microsoft IPP Class Driver regardless of the WPP status.
Windows on Arm devices Microsoft IPP Class Driver

On Arm-based PCs, enabling or disabling WPP does not affect Print Scout installation, Microsoft IPP Class Driver is always used.

For more information on Windows Arm support, refer to the Windows Arm64 Support document.

Windows 10 Pharos IPP Class Driver Defaults to Pharos Class IPP Driver but can be manually configured to use manufacturer driver (e.g. HP Universal Print Driver) via the Print Scout Configuration Tool.

Print Scout Configuration Default Settings

The Print Scout Configuration tool includes the Secure Queue Settings for Deployment section, providing IT admins with the option to configure the driver type for the Pharos Cloud secure queue. It also facilitates the creation of default finishing options for the secure queue.

There are two driver types to choose from:

  • IPP Class DriverThis is the default option for new Print scout installations. When selected, the actual driver used will depend on the operating system.
    • On Windows 11 or Windows on Arm devices, the Microsoft IPP Class Driver will be used regardless of WPP status. .
    • On Windows 10 , the Pharos Cloud IPP Class Driver is used.
  • Manufacturer Driver – This will set up the secure queue to use the manufacturer driver, HP Universal Printing PCL 6 driver.

Note: If your organization does not have a Pharos Secure Release license, the Secure Queue Settings for Deployment section will be greyed out.

IPP Driver Printing Preferences dialog

The default print settings for an IPP queue are determined by the configuration in the Print Scout Configuration Tool. For example, you can set the default paper size to A4 in the tool. However, users can override these defaults and adjust finishing options such as paper size, duplex, or color before submitting their print job.
