Adding and Deleting Printers

Printers, copiers and MFDs are added using a common dialog box, which gathers information relevant to the type of device and creates the entry. There are two scenarios you may encounter when adding printers:

  • You may be setting up a new printing system, in which case a Windows print queue corresponding to the device must be created .
  • You may be adding Pharos Uniprint to an existing printing system, in which case print queues most likely already exist. In this case you must "capture" the print queues, so that they are controlled by Pharos.

This affects the method you must use to add printers to the Pharos system.

Adding a New Printer

Before you insert a printer, make sure that the Print Service that will control it is installed and running at System > Server Configuration, and check that the correct printer driver is installed.

You can add a new printer at the Devices or Overview context of the Output Management.

You can use the Insert Assistant action from the Devices context to create new devices. It is a tool that walks you through the steps of creating an operational device.

To add a new printer record:
  1. In the Devices context Actions pane, select the Insert action ( ). This opens the Insert Device dialog,  which collects the necessary information and creates a new printer entry with it.
  2. In the Insert Device dialog, configure the following properties:
    • Name - Enter a name for the new printer.
    • Device Functions - From the drop-down list, select the "Print" function.
    • Job Attributes - Tick the boxes for the job attributes that the new printer will support (ticking no boxes means all attributes are supported).
    • Related Print Groups - Tick the boxes for the Print Groups that the new printer will be associated with.
    • Network Address - Enter the IP address or the hostname of the printer.
  1. Click OK. The new printer is inserted into the Pharos Database.

Deleting a Printer

To delete an existing printer record, select a printer and click the Delete option ( ) on the Devices Actions pane.

If any Transaction records exist for the printer, however, it will not be able to be deleted. Printers with associated transactions must be archived. This will remove the printer and any associated records.
